Once a year, the world of fashion descends upon the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala. It was set to be a night of glitz, glamour, and celebrity. However, it was announced that the Met Gala 2020 was to be cancelled. The theme of this year’s gala was to be based on The Costume Institute’s About Time: Fashion and Duration exhibit which opened in October and is running to February 2021. So, what could we be missing out on this year?
The Met Gala usually takes place on the first Monday in May. It is a star-studded affair and acts as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute. It reportedly raised nearly $15 Million in 2019.
The Met Gala 2020 was set to be co-chaired by Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, and Anna Wintour. In recent years, the Met Gala has been hosted by Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Serena Williams. In 2018, Rihanna, Amal Clooney, and Donatella Versace presented the big evening as co-hosts.
As we mentioned, the theme for the 2020 Met Gala was inspired by the About Time: Fashion and Duration exhibit. It is loosely based around the theories of French philosopher Henri Bergson and Virginia Woolf. It hopes to chart the rise of fashion from the late 1800s right up to the present day. It also wants to celebrate the Met’s 150th anniversary, but this has been put on ice until later in the year.
To mark the event, Vogue held a live stream on Youtube on the 4th May – the evening the gala was supposed to take place. It was a retrospective of all the previous Met Gala’s and invited special guests to talk about their favourite Met Gala moments. Vogue even went out of its way to make donations to the Met Costume Institute and A Common Thread. Vogue also urged viewers to make donations as well.
But all was not lost, on the night, celebrities took to social media and posted pictures of themselves and their costumes. For instance, Jennifer Lopez posted pictures of her red carpet looks from recent years. Katy Perry posted pictures of what she was planning on wearing this year as well. Julia Roberts even posted her homemade photo shoot. She got dressed up in her gown and posed for photos in her bathroom. Amanda Seyfried went feeding her chickens wearing her navy gown at home in her back garden.
